German Nouns / Genders (Articles)
There are two important points to know about the nouns in German language;
- Every noun starts with a capital letter.
- Every nounhas a gender.
A noun in German can be masculine, feminine or neuter. Similarly German articles also have three forms.
We will discuss german genders/articles in detail in the following lessons. Here, we will dscuss the articles to understand the gender of characteristic of nouns.
In English, we use "the" to denote someone or something about the things already mentioned or to point forward to a following qualifyin and defining clause or phrase.
On the other hand, German language has 3 different articles or simply "the" and their forms. These articles are classified as nouns genders and every noun in German language has it's own gender.
Note: every noun in German language is capitalized.
German nouns with "der"
"der" article corresponds to masculine gender.

"die" article corresponds to feminine gender.

"das" article corresponds to neuter gender.

It is relatively easier to find out the gender or the correct article for the living beings' nouns in German. However, there aren't any determined rules to appoint an article to a noun.
So, please keep in mind while learning the German nouns, we should always learn and memorize the articles along with nouns.

1. If a noun ends with: -er, -ig, -ling, -mus and -or, it is most likely masculine.

2. If a noun ends with: -in, -ion, -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -ei, -ik, -tät, -enz or -ie, it is most likely faminine

- die Gesundheit (the health) / die Schönkeit (the beauty)

3. If a nound ends with: -ment or -nis, it is most likely neuter.
