There is - There are / A1

 There is - are

Even native speakers are getting confused during a daily conversation about whether they should use "there is" or "there are".

In British English, "there is" has a much common use in daily conversations.

Today we will study on "there is - are" and exercise with the various examples in the end.

There is / There are

If we want to say that something exists or doesn't exist somewhere or at some time, we often use "there + be". It is often used to talk about something for the first time in a conversation.

 - There is a cup on the table.
 - There is a restaurant next to the shop.
 - There is not anyone in the house.
 - There are not any banks in the street.
 - Is there a supermarket around here?
 - Are there any eggs on the shelf.

In theory, we use "there is + singular" and "there are + plural".

 - There is a car in the street.
 - There are two cars in the street.

But we very, very often use there is + plural and singular when we are speaking. This is so common that it is not a mistake. We must use the short form here.

 - There is a car in the street.
 - There is two cars in the street.

We can use "there" with all tenses of be.

 - There were many good candidates for the job.
 - There won"t be a cake at the party.
 - There have been a lot of accidents today.
 - Will there be a train at 6 o'clock?
 - There hasn't been much rain these days.

We usually use "there + be" with a / an / some / any / no / much / many / a lot of and other various indefinite words.
We don't usually use it with "the" or proper names.

 - There is a dog in the garden.
 - There is the dog in the garden.
 - There is a boy outside.
 - There is Sam at the door.
